USA: Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook are dangerous for democracy
A report released after a 16-month investigation by the US Congress calls for changes that could lead to the split of some of the largest US technology companies, the BBC and Reuters reported.
The report said, the influence of technology giants has grown so much that they have become a threat to normal market relations and democracy.
The antitrust subcommittee of the Judicial Commission has recommended that Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook with a total market value of more than $ 5 trillion not participate in and control businesses in the same field.
The panel's report widely recommends structural separation, but does not say which specific company should be split.
The last time a large company was split was about a century ago. It is Rockefeller's Standard Oil, which before being divided by the US government had assets of about 1 trillion. dollars.
In its 449 pages, the report accuses Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook of charging high fees, forcing smaller customers to enter into unfavorable contracts and using illicit methods to crush competition from young and independent companies.
The report reveals, simply put, companies that were once small startups that started in garages and challenged the status quo have now become true monopolists, like those that last existed in the era of oil barons and railroad tycoons more than a century ago.
