UN: Covid-19 crisis in tourism industry is losing almost 400 billion euros worldwide
According to the United Nations, the international tourism industry recorded a historic economic crash in the first half of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of the temporary almost complete standstill of travel activities, the tourism industry suffered a loss of sales of 460 billion dollars (388 billion euros) from January to June.
The World Tourism Organization said on Tuesday in Madrid. The loss in sales was therefore five times higher than during the international financial and economic crisis in 2009. Overall, the number of worldwide tourists fell by 65 percent in the first half of the year. The organization explained that tourist trips were recently possible again in some regions of the world. However, the continued weak demand and a lack of consumer confidence in the tourism industry could have a lasting impact.
