Turkey is threatened by European witnesses
Turkey will be sanctioned by the European Union (EU). This happened after the Anatolian country's deteriorating relations with this group of European countries. Relations heated up after Turkey was claimed to have failed to help resolve disputes over natural gas resources in the Eastern Mediterranean with Greece and Cyprus. Both are members of the EU.
Reuters reported that, 27 European foreign ministers agreed to the possibility of additional sanctions against Turkey. President Erdogan's country is said to be playing provocative steps.
European diplomat Josep Borrell said on Tuesday, we have not seen a fundamental change in direction in Turkey's behavior. On the contrary, in some aspects the situation is deteriorating.
Recently, relations between Turkey and the EU have been unfriendly. Turkey, a NATO ally and potential EU candidate claims gas resources are also being contested by Greece and Cyprus. Not only that, a number of other Turkish activities also made Europe hot. The decision to reopen parts of cities in the disputed territory of North Cyprus and a dispute with Germany over a UN arms embargo on Libya are cited evidence that Turkey is no longer a reliable partner.
Erdogan meanwhile said his country would not be subject to European threats and blackmail. But reiterated his call for negotiation over conflicting claims over potential resources.
Meanwhile Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Twitter Turkey's stance was a challenge for the Union as a whole. It countered earlier comments on Monday by its Turkish counterpart that Greece and Cyprus were manipulating the EU to act against Turkey.
