Turkey carried out tests of a S-400 defense system of Russian origin
According to local video obtained by Reuters, a missile was launched into the sky on Friday off Turkey's Black Sea coast, where the military was expected to test its Russian-made S-400 defense systems. The video, shot in the coastal city of Sinop , showed a narrow plume of smoke rising into the blue sky.
The S-400 tests, if verified, could stoke tensions between Turkey and the United States, which strongly opposed Ankara's purchase of weapons from Moscow as it compromises NATO's shared defense systems.
After the different reports of the tests carried out by Ankara, the United States issued a statement repudiating the decision.
The State Department said it had warned Turkey at high levels that the acquisition of the S400 was unacceptable to a Western ally. It confirmed, we will condemn in the strongest terms the launch of the S400 test missile as inconsistent with Turkey's responsibilities as a NATO ally and strategic partner of the United States.
Despite repeated warnings, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said several times that Russian-sourced S-400s would be deployed. Robert Menendez , the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, blamed Trump for the alleged S-400 test and demanded action against Turkey. The test is a stark reminder that Ankara is not deterred by simple docile pleas from the Trump administration. Erdogan only responds to actions, not words. The breach of the law by President Trump and his affinity for Recep Tayyip Erdogan represent a serious threat to our national security and that of our allies and NATO partners in Europe.
