The World Bank cancels a loan to build a dam in Lebanon
On Friday, the World Bank announced the cancellation of a $ 244 million loan in favor of the construction of the Bisri Dam in Lebanon and stated that the decision will take effect immediately, according to Reuters. The bank attributed its decision to not completing the tasks required to start the construction process.
In a statement, the bank said it informed the Lebanese government of its decision on Friday. It is noteworthy that the decision coincided with the end of the period required to perform the tasks, and with calls from the environmental movements to stop the project and focus on financing other priorities.
Representative Bilal Abdullah tweeted, on his Twitter account Friday: Today ends the deadline that was given by the World Bank to the authority to complete the work of the Bisri Dam against which the objections continue and against all the failed dam policies. It is the opportunity to prove this bank, not His complicity, and his resort to procrastination and evasion throughout the previous periods, and to divert money to establish a new electricity plant.
On Thursday, the Lebanese environmental movement called on the World Bank to take a historic decision to stop financing the Bisri Dam project and transfer funds to meet the urgent needs of the Lebanese people noting that the deadline granted to the Lebanese government to implement the conditions required to complete the Bisri Dam project ends on September 4, 2020. According to the Lebanese News Agency.
