The Swiss judiciary investigates Riad Salameh's transfers and requests Lebanon's cooperation
For the first time, accusations were effectively leveled at the Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh. Official investigations are being opened with a file of financial transfers around which he has questioned marks abroad. It appears that Switzerland has launched an investigation against Salameh, in cooperation with the European Union, against the background of these transfers. The investigations include his brother Raja Salameh and his assistant, Marian Al-Hawaik.
The Minister of Justice in the caretaker government, Marie-Claude Negm, announced that she had received a request for cooperation from the authorities in Switzerland, relating to the provision of legal aid regarding the file of financial transfers belonging to the governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon.
The Swiss authorities opened an investigation, and their request to cooperate with the Lebanese judicial authorities, summoned the Governor of the Banque du Liban to issue a statement today, Tuesday, in which he affirmed his permanent commitment to the Lebanese and international laws in force, and his cooperation with all those concerned about Lebanon and its financial and banking situation at home and abroad.
In the statement, Salameh emphasized that all allegations about alleged financial transfers made abroad, whether in his name, in the name of his brother or in the name of his assistance, are just fabrications and false news that have no basis. And it will be the subject of prosecution against anyone who publishes it and publishes it with the intent to abuse it.
The strange thing is that after Reuters agency quoted Justice Minister Marie-Claude Najm, that she had received a request for judicial cooperation from the judicial authorities in Switzerland, the Minister of Justice clarified that she had not made any statement on the matter. Rather, it was an answer to a question whether a request received from the Swiss judicial authorities, and they answered it as follows: I received a request for judicial cooperation from the judicial authorities in Switzerland, and I delivered the request to the public prosecutor for discrimination to take action.
