The Moria refugee camp is a thing of the past, the new Athens will be built with EU help

The recently burned Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos is a thing of the past and will be replaced by a new facility for migrants in the operation of which the European Union should be more involved.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said this after talks with the head of the European Council, Charles Michel. However, the situation on the island remains tense, with police arresting six men on suspicion of arson in connection with fires in Moria on Tuesday

Many Lesbians and some local government officials are asking the Greek government to transport migrants to mainland Greece. The prefect of the northern Aegean region of Kostas, Muntzuris, one of the biggest opponents of Migrants' stay on Lesbos, called on local businessmen to take to the streets to protest, according to AFP. Government ministers, on the other hand, insist that people fleeing must remain on the island and warned that they could use force to move them to the new camp.

Mitsotakis said, it is time for Europe to turn its verbal support into action, into some tangible step of solidarity. Michel supported him in this matter, saying that the burden of tackling migration should be shared by all Member States of the Union. Camp Moria was completely destroyed last week by a series of deliberate fires as locals protested against the ordered quarantine over covi-19 . Since then, more than 12,000 migrants have spent days and nights in the open air. Only about 1,000 of them, mostly families with children, found refuge in a tent camp in the area of the Kara Tepe army shooting range, where about 5,000 places are available so far.

Police first arrested five suspects who they said had started the fires. The arsonists have been arrested. They are young migrants. One more is being searched,. According to the DPA, Afghans are arrested who failed to apply for asylum with the Greek authorities. The sixth suspect was arrested by police tonight.

Greek authorities distribute leaflets to migrants in English, French, Arabic, Urdu and Farsi, urging homeless people to report to a makeshift camp. Moving asylum seekers to a new camp is a done deal, it cannot be negotiated .

Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis, also said that efforts to relocate migrants voluntarily would continue, but did not rule out the use of force if refugees refused to relocate. If this cannot be explained, then we will have to deploy the police. It is their duty to move to the new premise.

According to him, the construction of the new permanent facility will take at least half a year, which means that people will probably have to spend the winter in tents. The German government today confirmed that it will accept 1,553 migrants from the five Greek islands. These are to be refugee families, said German Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz. Already last week, Germany promised to take care of about 100 to 150 juvenile migrants from Moria. A total of 400 European migrants plan to share a total of 400 migrant minors.
