The city of Louisville reaches an agreement with the family of Breonna Taylor after six months
The Kentucky city of Louisville reached a $ 12 million settlement with Breonna Taylor's family six months after she was shot while sleeping at her home during a police raid for drugs in which she had nothing to do see. Mayor Greg Fischer announced the terms of the deal at a press conference Tuesday with Taylor's family and his attorneys, Benjamin Crump, Sam Aguiar and Lonita Baker. The Louisville Courier Journal newspaper was the first to publicize the agreement.
Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, filed a lawsuit in late April against three officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department, accusing them of wrongfully causing her daughter's death. One of the officers, Brett Hankison, who fired 10 blind rounds at the apartment, where no drugs or money were found, was fired in June. Officer Myles Cosgrove and Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly were placed on administrative leave without pay, along with the detective who requested the search warrant. None of the officers involved in the case have been charged.
The investigation is led by Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, in which the FBI is also involved. Agents killed Taylor, 26, shortly after midnight on March 13 while serving a warrant. Mattingly was shot in the thigh when Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shot him thinking that an intruder had broken into the house. Taylor had no criminal record and was never the subject of an investigation.
Authorities said, police were executing a search warrant in a drug investigation involving the ex-boyfriend of Taylor Jamarcus Glover, a convicted drug dealer who had used his ex-partner's address to receive merchandise.
