The last silk printing plant in Glarus, Switzerland, is to close forever at the end of the year, leaving 18 employees without jobs. The closure is a major blow to the canton, which has a long history of textile production.
The plant, located in Mitlödi, has been struggling for years due to competition from Asia. The Corona pandemic further exacerbated the situation, and the company was unable to find a new owner.
In recent years, the plant had relied on orders from the Swiss military and from F. Blumer & Cie, the manufacturer of the Glarner Tüechli, a traditional Swiss handkerchief. However, these orders were not enough to keep the plant afloat.
The closure of the plant is a sign of the decline of the Swiss textile industry. Once a major player in the global market, the industry has been shrinking for decades. In recent years, many Swiss textile companies have closed or moved their production to Asia.
The closure of the Glarner Tüechli's silk printing plant is a sad day for the canton of Glarus and for the Swiss textile industry as a whole. It is a reminder of the challenges facing traditional industries in the global economy.
