South Korea: Two aides of Congressman Lee Sang-jik arrested on charges of violating election law

Aide Lee Sang-jik and Democratic Party lawmakers were arrested for violating the Public Office Election Act. On the 21st, Judge Choi Hyung-cheol in charge of the warrant of the Jeonju District Court issued arrest warrants for two people including Mr. A's close friend. Judge Choi Hyung-cheol said, we issued a warrant for fear of destruction of evidence and escape.

Judge Choi dismissed the arrest warrant for Mr. B, who was under the same charges with them saying, the necessity and substantiality of arrest are insufficient. In light of the fact that Mr. B was investigated in good faith in responding to the summons and the status and role of the camp, it is difficult to see that there is a risk of escape. Even if the public offering relationship is recognized, it seems that it is only a simple participation. In light of the fact that considerable material evidence has been collected it is difficult to say that there is a concern about destruction of evidence.

Mr. A and Mr. B are being accused of sending a message to support Congressman Lee Sang-jik in the process of the Democratic Party candidate in Jeonju-eul, Jeonbuk, the 21st general election. Mr. A and others are also charged with sending text messages requesting duplicate votes to rights party members and citizens. According to the Public Official Election Act, sending large amounts of text messages can only be done by prospective candidates or candidates.

On April 16, the day after the general election, the prosecutors seized and searched the election office of Congressman Lee in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. At the time, the prosecution was known to have secured a number of evidence.
