Russia can block Twitter on its territory in a month if this social network does not comply with Russian requirements and does not remove the allegedly prohibited content. According to Moscow, Twitter is not responding to requests.
The fact that Russia is considering blocking the American social network on its territory has been talked about in Moscow since last week. According to Russian authorities, Twitter allows the promotion of illegal behavior and the dissemination of prohibited information throughout the federation. State Roskomnadzor states that there are currently more than 3,000 posts with allegedly banned content on twitter sites. However, the company denies these allegations.
Last week, Roskomnadzor tried to punish the social network for ignoring its demands by deliberately slowing down, which affected videos and photos shared on the social network. According to the Russian censorship office, centralized measures have been put in place to protect Russian citizens and force the Internet service to comply with the law of the Russian Federation. Russian users now have more difficult access to Twitter.
In response to Russia's actions, the company said it was concerned about the impact of the intervention on freedom of expression. However, the Russian authorities call such claims absurd.
However, tensions between Twitter and Moscow are rising with a new challenge from Roskomnadzor's deputy chief Vadim Subotin, who has warned of a possible complete blockade of the social network.
He said, we have taken a break for a month to follow Twitter's reactions to removing banned information. Then, according to the reaction of the social network administration, we will make the appropriate decision. If Twitter does not meet the requirements of Roskomnadzor, the requirements of Russian law, we will consider a complete blockade on Russian territory, Russian Subotina quoted average. He also added that this could happen without a court order.
Reuters made this request marked for the escalation of Moscow's dispute with American Internet giants.
The fact that Twitter may disappear from the smartphones of Russian users is not ruled out by the Internet Ombudsman of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Marinichev. At the same time, however, he expressed the hope that Russia would not have to take such a step and that both sides of the conflict would be able to agree on something.
It's Twitter according to Marinicheva is a small law abiding company, despite being able to "block the president of his own country.
Both officials agree that Twitter could avoid blocking if it takes into account all of Moscow's demands. However, according to the head of the department of control and supervision in the field of electronic communications of the Russian Roskomnadzor Yevgeny Zaitsev, Twitter completely ignores them.
