The entry of China, Russia and Cuba into the United Nations Human Rights Council has aroused strong discontent in Washington, which did not hesitate to severely criticize the result of the elections, calling the Council a farce.
The United States is deeply disappointed in the election of China, Russia and Cuba to the seats of the UN Human Rights Council. The election of some of the worst perpetrators of human rights crimes in the world makes the Council's mission a farce. With these harsh words, State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus commented on the entry of new members elected by the United Nations General Assembly.
The Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo said, the election of China, Russia and Cuba to the UN Human Rights Council validates the United States decision to withdraw from the Council in 2018 and use other venues to protect and promote universal human rights.
Russia, China and Cuba were elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday evening along with Ivory Coast, Gabon, Malawi, Senegal, Nepal, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Bolivia, Mexico, France and Great Britain. The mandate will start on January 1, 2021 and will run for three years. Saudi Arabia, outgoing member of the Council, was not elected.
