Riots broke out in Greece
In the Athens suburbs, a massive peaceful protest against police violence escalated into violent clashes. Near the Greek capital Athens, on Tuesday evening, March 9, riots broke out and several hundred people clashed with the police. This is reported by the Greek media.
Initially, a peaceful protest action was held, in which about 5 thousand people took part. People took to the streets to protest police violence following the publication of a video of police beating a man in Nea Smyrni. In the evening, nearly 800 people rioted. They threw firecrackers and stones at the police, set fire to trash cans and damaged several cars. Greek authorities reported that a police officer was severely beaten. Several of his colleagues created a circle of motorcycles around the victim to protect him. Also, the police said that a backpack with gasoline and firecrackers was found in the neighboring Neos-Kosmos area.
Earlier it was reported that in January in Tunisia during street clashes more than 600 people participating in demonstrations were detained.
