President of Uruguay describe reduced tourist season in Uruguay

The president of the Uruguayan Chamber of Tourism, Marina Cantera, described today a summer season on weekends with fewer crowds and reduced expenses. Tourism companies are very fragile and we need to start thinking about how we are going to save them, he told the Underlined Portal to warn that the movement registered is not enough to alleviate the situation of 10 months of stoppage. Regarding this recreational activity in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, he said that Uruguayans chose to vacation in beach destinations further east and many try to protect themselves in their 'bubbles' as isolated as possible. According to data published by the Tourist Enjoyment Monitor for the week of January 4 to 10, the movement of buses was 25 percent lower and this proportional value in turn corresponded to actual rentals. The source added that 48 percent of tourists stayed between three and seven days and only 17 percent for more than 15 days, while restaurants worked 60 percent. Meanwhile, the Association of Hotels and Restaurants called for an 'economic rescue' to the sector since the season is 'worse than expected', with 25 percent occupancy during the week and 35 percent on weekends in the spa from Punta del Este. The entity highlighted that Montevideo, the department hardest hit by the pandemic, does not take off with one in 10 hotels that had to close their doors due to the lack of visitors.
