Peru elected the third president in more than a week
Mr. Sagasti, a 76 year old center right engineer, was selected as the chairman of the National Assembly and by constitutional he would immediately take over as head of the country when the position is vacant. With Mr. Sagasti elected interim President, the Peruvian Parliament also elected left-wing MP Mirtha Vasquez as head of the legislature in place of Sagasti.
This is the third head of Peru in more than a week after former President Martin Vizcarra was removed from the National Assembly on corruption allegations and Mr. Merino was also forced to resign just days after coming to power before pressure from the protests of the people. He was also investigated by the prosecution on allegations of power abuse and intentional murder after clashes between protesters and police left two people dead and more than 100 injured. .
