Nuclear: US-Russia agreement for New Start extension
The US has announced an agreement in principle with Russia for the extension of the New Start treaty for the reduction of nuclear weapons, the last such agreement still standing between Washington and Moscow. The treaty will expire in early 2021.
US negotiator Marshall Billingsea said, we want to extend the New Start treaty for a certain period, provided that they agree to limit, to freeze, their nuclear arsenal. We believe there is an agreement in principle at the highest level of the two governments.
But a freeze of nuclear arsenals, as proposed by Washington in the negotiations on the extension of the New Start treaty, is unacceptable for Russia.
Moscow Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov, quoted by Russian agencies. It is an unacceptable proposal.
