New York sends 100,000 incorrectly printed absentee ballots
It was confirmed that nearly 100,000 absentee ballots were sent in New York, USA, with important information such as the name of the voter incorrectly printed. The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 30th that an official from the New York City Election Commission admitted to the fact that part of the absentee ballot for the November presidential election was misprinted and sent.
NYT said it was confirmed that the name of the person residing at the actual address was printed on the ballot, or the address stamped on the return envelope was different from the delivered envelope. In some cases, absentee ballots sent to ordinary citizens were printed as'military absentee ballot. If an absentee ballot is cast on a ballot bearing another person's name, the ballot will be void.
The New York City elections committee said that if you have already voted absentee without knowing that the ballot was printed incorrectly, you can vote directly.
However, it is pointed out that this mistake will have a negative impact on the overall elections in a situation where President Donald Trump repeats the claim that voting by mail is a fraud.
New York Mayor Bill Doublelazio criticized misprinting of the absentee ballot as a terrible mistake.
The NEC explained that a mistake occurred in the process of printing the first edition by a subcontractor. It is reported that the misprinted absentee ballots were sent to Brooklyn, New York City. In New York City, the rate of absentee voting was around 4% in the previous year, but the absentee voting rate in the last June contest surged to 40% in the aftermath of the Covid-19.
At the time, it is known that there were tens of thousands of absentee votes in Brooklyn alone, which were invalidated because there were no postmarks or signatures during the check-up process.
