Myanmar discontinues all flights to and from the country


The Myanmar Times newspaper on February 2 reported that all flights to and from Myanmar were suspended. AP news agency quoted information from Myanmar authorities also said that Myanmar has stopped all passenger flights in this country.


According to a notice sent to Myanmar pilots (NOTAM) on 1-2 that the Myanmar Times saw, all pilots were asked not to fly to Myanmar without receiving permission.


All previous permits for landing and taking off in Myanmar have been revoked. This decision affects both international and domestic relief flights.


According to NOTAM that the Myanmar Times saw, all flights were "suspended" and the airports would be closed until 23:59 p.m. on May 31. However, foreign embassies in Myanmar informed citizens that international flights would be suspended until April 30.


The Myanmar Times reported that Myanmar's airports have not received any official instructions to suspend flights.


According to the Associated Press, on Facebook, the US embassy in Myanmar said the road leading to the international airport in Yangon - Myanmar's largest city - was closed on 1-2. On Twitter, they also said "reports indicate that all airports in Myanmar have been closed".


On February 1, Myanmar's military announced it had imposed a state of emergency in the country for a year. General Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar army, temporarily took control of the country after the Myanmar army's coup (as Western media called it) against the civilian government on the same day.


President Win Myint, state adviser Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of the National Alliance for Democracy (NLD) Party were captured by the Myanmar army. They are believed to be under house arrest in the capital Naypyidaw.
