''Marriage for everyone'' is now also possible in Switzerland
As one of the last countries in Western Europe, Switzerland introduced "marriage for all" on Friday. It is now legal for people of the same sex to marry each other. There was a rush of gay and lesbian couples on the first day in Zurich, among other places, with more than two dozen ceremonies. Among them were men and women already living in a registered partnership and who wanted to change their status.
Referendum
Opponents of the planned change in the law had forced a referendum last year. This ended in September with 64.1 percent approval of "marriage for all". Swiss Post issued a special postage stamp when it came into effect. It shows 30 balloons tied together to form a large rainbow-colored heart that lifts off towards the sky. Attached to the balloons are four cards that say "Yes" in all four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
Same-sex marriage has been possible in Austria since January 1, 2019.
