Madman surfs at high tide in the Ybbs
The situation was dramatic, heavy rain on Saturday night and on Sundays until late in the evening caused around 410 firefighting operations in the Lower Austrian districts of St. Pölten, Melk, Scheibbs and Tulln. A man even drowned at the Wallsee power plant in the Amstetten district in the Danube. Incredible scenes meanwhile played out in the Ybbs. Daring ones used the flood to go surfing in the river. A video that is currently going viral on the Internet shows how a young surfer ventures into the floods. Colleagues of the man stand on the bank and watch the whole thing.
They write on Facebook, the fire brigade is very angry, many emergency services are wondering whether it is necessary to risk your own life and that of the emergency services in the event of flooding. Flotsam and strong currents are life threatening and can be fatal. District fire brigade commander Rudolf Katzengruber adds that barriers apply to everyone.
