Bangladesh police said that at least 50,000 people participated in the largest demonstration in the country today to protest French President Emmanuel Macron's defense of the right to publish a caricature of the Islamic prophet Mohammed. The rally started at the largest mosque in Bangladesh. The crowd was prevented from approaching the French embassy. The authorities have strengthened the security protection of the embassy. The police estimated that about 50,000 people participated in the protest that called for a boycott of French goods, but the organizer said more than 100,000 people participated. The protesters repeatedly shouted don't slander the Prophet Muhammad and burned the portrait of Macron.
French middle school history teacher Samuel Paty was killed near the school in mid-October for showing a caricature of the Islamic prophet Muhammad to students in class. Macron said that France will never announce the suspension of laws that allow the publication of such caricatures causing dissatisfaction in the Islamic world.
