Luxembourg: Foreign minister of US refused to be accepted by the representative of tiny Luxembourg

US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo canceled his trip to Europe at the last minute. He was scheduled to fly on Tuesday, but his Luxembourg counterpart and other European Union officials refused to meet with him, the agency wrote by Reuters. European politicians have thus made it unusually clear that they no longer count on the ending Donald Trump administration. Whenever Pompeo had previously visited the headquarters of the European Union or the North Atlantic Alliance in Brussels, he received a warm welcome and was a keynote speaker at various events. After the attack on the Capitol last week, this is no longer the case, Trump's ally is no longer a relevant partner. The official reason for canceling Pompe's visit was to coordinate the transfer of power to Joe Biden's new administration, but the real reasons were clearly different. Pompeo canceled the trip on Monday. It was on that day that Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, whom Pompeo was to meet before traveling to Brussels, called Trump a criminal for inciting the attack on the Capitol. According to Asselborn, the outgoing American president is a political pyromaniac who must be brought to justice. Asselborn spoke of Senator Ted Cruz and other Republicans still behind the head of state as Trump's poodles. The reason for canceling the meeting was not commented by the Luxembourg minister. Asselborn is a respected figure in Brussels, despite the size of his country. He is also often heard in international politics and is one of the politicians who speaks quite openly. Four years ago, for example, he proposed that Hungary's membership of the EU be suspended due to widespread violations of EU rules. Last year, he expressed skepticism about peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates according to him, only a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will bring stability to the region. Both Reuters and US Conservative Fox News reported that the decision to cancel Tuesday's meeting came from Luxembourgers. In diplomatic circles, this is something practically unprecedented - a representative of a nation of 6,000 has humiliated the foreign minister of the most powerful state in the world. In Brussels, Pompeo was to have a private dinner with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg and meet with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sophia Wilmes. Those pictures are shocking. Also because they hurt our democratic ideals, Wilmes tweeted after the anti-Trump radicals entered the Capitol building. Stoltenberg also described the shots as shocking, stressing that the result of democratic elections must be respected. During his previous visits, Pompeo enjoyed the status of a privileged guest, despite the fact that Europeans did not hide their opposition to Trump's foreign policy. Pompeo is one of Trump's most loyal allies. It was the Secretary of State who was one of those who repeatedly said that his boss would continue in the White House, even at a time when Biden's election victory had long been clear. Pompey never publicly admitted Trump's defeat. Pompeo is trying to take some foreign policy steps at the last minute, just days before Trump's presidential term expires. He announced, for example, that he would add the Yemeni Shiite Huti movement to the list of terrorist organizations. Although the Iranian-backed Hutis commit many crimes in the civil war in Yemen, the same is said by the UN about their opponents led by Saudi Arabia, Trump's largest ally in the Arab world. Pompeo also wants to re-enlist Cuba on the list of terrorist sponsors (Sudan recently dropped out after normalizing relations with Israel) and also highlighted links between the theocratic Iranian regime and the al-Qaeda terrorist network. Because of this move, some commentators have even speculated that Trump will not start a war in the last days of his mandate against Iran. This news originally published in seznamzpravy
