Two months ago, the judicial judge in charge of investigating the huge explosion that destroyed the Beirut port and killed and injured many people received a report from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about his own investigation into the explosion, the Lebanese News Agency reported today i.e. Tuesday.
The news agency said that Judge Fadi Sawan received a report from the FBI on Monday, adding that he was still waiting for similar reports from French and British explosives experts. The news did not include details about the content of the report.
The August 4 blast in Beirut port killed nearly 200 people, injured nearly 6,500, and caused billions of dollars in damage. Nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate , a highly explosive chemical, exploded in the Beirut port, where it had been stored in the facility for nearly six years. The cause of the nitrates igniting is still unknown, but authorities have arrested more than 20 people, many of them port and customs officials. Since then, Sawan, the judge in charge of the investigation, interrogated senior security officials, former ministers and port employees .
The National News Agency said that the reports of foreign investigation teams will determine the cause of the nitrate explosion, the nature of the explosion, whether there was an intentional act of sabotage, or whether the explosion was the result of an error or a miscalculation about the risks of the substance that exploded.
