Israeli airstrikes on weapons depots in Syria kill more than 20 people
At least seven Syrian soldiers and sixteen fighters from their allies were killed Wednesday night in raids on weapons depots and military positions in eastern Syria. According to AFP, the Syrian Human Rights Organization (SOHR), which is based in the United Kingdom and monitors the war in Syria through its on-site contacts, announced this. The organization claims that the attacks were carried out by Israeli planes. SOHR said Israeli planes had carried out more than eighteen raids on several targets in the province of Dairez-Zaur near the Iraqi border. The Syrian state news agency SANA also reported on the attacks. According to her, targets were hit near the cities of Dajr az-Zaur, Majadín and Búkamál, where Iran-backed militias operate. 23 people were killed in this year's second series of Israeli airstrikes. In previous similar attacks, three Iranian allies died in southern Syria on January 7. The Israeli military does not immediately comment on its activities in Syria, and it has not done so now. However, according to the Israeli media, the Israelis have attacked the area in the past because a route connecting Iran with Lebanon through the territory of Iraq and Syria passes through it. According to Israel, Iran is sending weapons and missiles through it to Lebanese Hezbollah.
