The Iraq Council of Ministers voted unanimously in its session held on Tuesday, to set the tenth of next October as the date for holding early elections.
The Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq suggested postponing the early elections scheduled for next June 6, for important technical reasons that would ensure the integrity of the elections and equal opportunities for everyone to run in the elections freely and fairly.
Early elections were a key demand by the anti-government protesters, who organized demonstrations that began in October 2019.
The Council of Ministers voted on the new date for the elections during its session in which it hosted the members of the Independent High Electoral Commission.
The Board of Commissioners had previously proposed setting the 10th of October as the date for holding the election.
