Haitian opposition still disagrees on eventual transitional government
The Haitian opposition must present today the final agreement to launch a possible transitional government, however, they still disagree as to who could replace the president.
Just nine days from the date on which they estimate the term of the head of State, Jovenel Moïse, to expire, 80 percent of the main political organizations agree that one of the judges of the Court of Cassation should take office, according to statements by Moïse Jean-Charles, coordinator of the Pitit Dessalines party.
"We have done everything possible to find a consensus," Edmonde Beauzile, a member of the Political Directorate of the Democratic Opposition, told Le Nouvelliste newspaper. He added that currently there are only differences in concept.
The hostile fringes went through a process of destructuring during 2020, amid corruption scandals, internal disputes and the Covid-19 pandemic itself that demobilized its followers.
However, since the middle of last year they have argued that Moïse's term ends next February, and argue that the Constitution stipulates, regardless of the swearing-in date, the link between the presidential term and the electoral process, in this case 2015.
Several Personalities support this interpretation of the Magna Carta and assure that the elections held in 2016 are a continuation of the votes canceled due to fraud in the previous year.
While the opposition prepares the departure of Moïse from the National Palace and the formation of a transitory administration, the program formulated by this sector to get the country out of the deep systemic crisis is still unknown.
Broadly speaking, these forces have proposed a modification of the Magna Carta, and the holding of elections after a period of three years, plans similar to those promoted by the current president.
They also pledged to combat insecurity, responsible for more than a thousand deaths in 2020, and to prosecute those involved in the embezzlement of billions of dollars from the public treasury, among whom the current president stands out.
As the political crisis worsens with massive demonstrations announced for next week and a general strike called by the coalition of unions, the security climate in the country deteriorates, and kidnappings and murders increase.
Meanwhile, the president continues with his bill to amend the law through a popular consultation set for April 25, and the general elections scheduled for September.
Power comes from the people, if you want to lead the people, you have to have the approval of the people, he said the day before during the fifth government day dedicated to the economy, in which he also attacked his political adversaries whom he described as immoral forces.
