Hackers hack thousands of CCTV cameras in hospitals, US prisons and Tesla plants

Unknown hackers hacked into the security system of the startup Verkada, which offers video surveillance services for corporate clients, and gained access to more than 150,000 video cameras. The attackers watched what was happening in Tesla's factories, schools, prisons, hospitals and police stations.

A Bloomberg journalist contacted the attackers and they confirmed the information about the hack. They said that they first logged in with a Super Admin login found online, and later used the camera's capabilities to gain root access and remote control.

Hackers could watch videos from women's clinics, psychiatric hospitals and even Verkada's offices. The journalist managed to watch the interrogation at the police station in Stoneton and one video from the Tesla factory in Shanghai. In addition, the attackers gained full access to the entire video archive of all customers of the company.

One of the members of the group that hacked Verkada said that the whole situation shows how widely video surveillance is used and how little attention is paid to security systems. According to him, such companies pursue only one goal - profit.

After a Bloomberg reporter contacted Verkada and reported the hack, the company responded by shutting down all internal administrators' accounts to cut off unauthorized access.

Spokesman for the startup said that the security service was investigating the vulnerabilities and reported the incident to law enforcement. The measures taken blocked the access of hackers to the cameras.
