Former police officer charged with Floyd's murder released on parole
Former police officer Derek Sauvin, charged with the murder of African-American George Floyd, was released from prison today on bail of $ 1 million. Sauvin is charged with second- and third-degree murder and negligent homicide over Floyd's May 25 death in Minneapolis. This case sparked a wave of mobilizations across the United States against police violence and racism.
The court set a condition for his unconditional release on bail of 1.25 million. He paid 1 million, which means that he was released on parole, which includes a ban on working in law enforcement agencies and coming to contact with Floyd's family. He will also have to hand over any firearms licenses he has.
The 44-year-old former police officer will stand trial in March along with three other former colleagues accused of complicity in Floyd's death, in which Sauvin had been kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes.
