For the first time, German military counterintelligence will have a woman as its chief
The German military counterintelligence (MAD) will be led by a woman for the first time in its history, after it was announced that the lawyer Martina Rosenberg will be the new head of the service, DPA reported, quoted by BTA. Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karenbauer has notified the appointment of the German parliament's defense committee, participants in the meeting told DPA. Rosenberg, who until now worked as a specialist lawyer for the German armed forces in disciplinary proceedings against servicemen, will replace the chairman of the IAD, Christoph Graham.
The personnel changes came after Kramp-Karenbauer vowed to show toughness against right-wing extremism in the Bundeswehr after a series of scandals, including the disbandment of an entire company of elite special operations forces (KSK). As of this month, Gram has been fired. Kramp-Karenbauer praised his reform efforts, but said the MAD, which has an important role to play in monitoring extremism in the military, needs a change in leadership.
