Boris Johnson asks Rouhani to release all detained binationals
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on Wednesday in a call with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for the immediate release of all British-Iranian binationals detained and the return of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, according to a statement from Downing Street.
The 42-year-old project manager, employed by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was released from her electronic bracelet last Sunday after serving five years in prison on charges of plotting against the regime, which she has always disputed .
She is summoned again next Sunday by Iranian justice.
The British leader deemed totally unacceptable, the current situation of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who must be allowed to return to his family in the United Kingdom.
During this meeting with the Iranian president, Boris Johnson also underlined that Tehran must cease all its nuclear activities which violate the terms of the agreement on the subject and underlined to him the importance that Iran seizes the opportunity presented by the United States.
Former US President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which was supposed to prevent Tehran from acquiring the atomic bomb, but which he deemed insufficient, and reinstated all US sanctions.
Joe Biden said he was ready to return if Iran also comes back within the restrictions on its nuclear program, from which it has begun to free itself. During his meeting with Hassan Rouhani, Boris Johnson further urged Iran to cease its destabilizing activities and to become a positive force in the Gulf region.
