Biden refuses to barter sanctions to negotiate with Iran
The American President, Joe Biden, explained the features of the practical approach that the American administration will follow in a number of files, as he expressed his refusal to lift the sanctions on Iran, as a price for returning Tehran to the negotiating table on the nuclear agreement, and confirmed that relations between America and China will take the form of utmost competition.
Biden said in a press statement that the United States will not lift the sanctions it imposes on Iran to force Tehran to return to the negotiating table, to discuss ways to revive the nuclear deal.
In response a to question, whether Washington would lift the sanctions first, to get Iran to return to the negotiating table, Biden said in a recorded interview the day before yesterday, No.
Asked if Iran should stop enriching uranium first, Biden nodded. It was not clear what Biden meant exactly, as the 2015 nuclear deal allows Iran to enrich uranium to certain limits.
On China, Biden stressed that the rivalry between the United States and China would take the form of extreme competition, while stressing that he wanted to avoid any conflict between the two largest economic powers.
Officials in the US foreign policy and national security team ruled out an immediate US return to the nuclear deal with Iran. Noting a desire to return to diplomacy with Tehran, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have also made clear that they are prepared to wait. They want a longer and stronger agreement" with Tehran.
This leaves space for Biden to pursue a different policy in dealing with Iran, which is not a reaction to Trump's policy, and is not a direct continuation of Obama's policy, said journalist Bobby Ghosh, in a report published by Bloomberg News.
The administration's current position on the nuclear deal is that the Iranians, who have long violated the rules on uranium enrichment limits imposed by the agreement, must revert to compliance with the terms Obama agreed, before the United States allows any easing of sanctions imposed by Trump.
