Macky Sall will take over the rotating presidency of the African Union for the period 2022-2023, indicates the Senegalese presidency on his Facebook page. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) endorsed Senegal's candidacy at the end of an extraordinary summit, held Tuesday, February 2 by videoconference.
The election of Macky Sall will be formalized on February 6 during the 34th ordinary summit of the AU. Senegal will thus take over after the Democratic Republic of the Congo elected for the period 2021-2022, at the end of the mandate of South Africa which has just expired.
This announced election is good news for Morocco. Sall will take his seat in the African Union troika on Western Sahara next weekend in place of the Egyptian Abdelfattah Al Sissi, who will definitely leave this presidential club launched at the top in July 2018 at the Nouakchott summit.
This should neutralize the influence of Cyril Ramaphosa, who will be stuck during the next twelve months between two great allies of the kingdom namely Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and Macky Sall.
